If you visit the location of your WIP novel, take some pictures to save on your computer. They will inspire you and give you a solid basis for describing your scenes. I get images of people, buildings, landscapes, plants, etc.

While I am writing, I can look at the picture and describe the details I see. Then I add memory, emotional content, and characters interacting with each other and their surroundings.

Scrivener has areas to store images within chapter notes: portraits, landscapes, objects, buildings, interiors of businesses, etc.

Emotional content-is it just a dilapidated building, a childhood home in disrepair, or a haunted house? The same picture can show all three and more. It’s interpretation and imagination.

The picture below is of cactus in my hometown of El Paso. Adding local plants and monuments will add authenticity. What would “Fried Green Tomatoes” be without the Whistle Stop Cafe?
