Grammarly Writing and Editing Software

Grammarly is an app that makes writing and editing your fiction, content, and copywriting faster and easier. It spots typos, verb tense agreement, wordy sentences, punctuation mistakes, and more. I’ve used it to write my novel, web content, and other business writing. But I keep it always active because it also catches my mistakes in social media posts and emails. There is a free version and a Premium version. Try them both. It definitely saves a lot of time and allows me to be a better writer.

One word of caution: never blindly take Grammarly or any other editing software’s advice. It may change the meaning of what you have written and dispense of important nuances. When something is red-flagged as such (I don’t mean typos and misspellings), evaluate it carefully. If Grammarly doesn’t understand what you meant, a reader may not either. At times I’ve rewritten whole paragraphs–for the better–thanks to the app pointing it out. We are the writers; they are the tools. We must be in control and use them skillfully.

Goal Setting

What do you want to see in your future? To be a better writer? To create and maintain a blog or begin a new hobby? To get into shape? These are all worthy visions, but you must turn them into goals if you want to make them happen. What is the difference? Analysis, decision, and commitment. Envision a very simple goal, like eating tacos for lunch. Analysis may show whether you have the ingredients at home and whether you want to cook. It may also tell you that there is a great restaurant two blocks away. You decide one or the other and then apply an action; driving or walking to the restaurant or begin preparing your meal in the kitchen. Sitting down to eat, your goal is complete.

Often our goals have higher stakes and greater complexity. I’ve used a system called S.M.A.R.T. Goals for decades. Once you have a vision of what you want, apply these five criteria–

  • S stands for specific. If you want a new car, what kind? Make, model, color, features, MPG, etc.. The more vivid the vision, the more compelling the goal. Do you want more money? Be specific! Make it a dollar amount. Decide and follow up on what you are going to do to earn it–more hours, a promotion, side gig, studying how to be successful, etc.
  • M stands for measurable. Again how many dollars: per hour, week, month, year or project? Better relaitionships? with whom–be specific. Excellent health is vague. What is your ideal weight? What exercise program or diet will you follow? How to you measure it: number of push ups, miles walked or ran, pounds lifted during a squat or press. Actual numbers keep you accountable.
  • A stands achieveable. Goals should make you stretch, but if you don’t believe they are reachable you will abandon them. Make your self work for them but don’t make them impossible. You may not make a million dollars this year (though many people do) but increasing your income by 20, 50, or even 100% is feasable
  • R stands for relevant. Relevant to what? To your other goals and to your life. Often to reach a goal and gain something new, you have to give up something else in opportunity cost. Most often this is measured in time and money.
  • T stands for time-bound. Working toward a goal needs an ending date. Not “someday,” but something specific like March 3, 2023. Each goal is different, and completion dates need to be figured to also be achievable and relevant to the other parts of your life. Strive to complete your goal on or before your deadline; but don’t quit if you don’t finish on time. Make a new date and hold yourself accountable.
